SQ: Can I Have a Social Life in Law School?

Posted by AustinGroothuis | 28 Feb, 2007

    Drink

This isn't a specific question, but I've received several reader submitted questions in the past basically asking what the social life in law school is or can be like. Read my response below...

Contrary to what some of you may have been told, there is time outside of class and studying for socialization.

    Studying

The simple truth is you have to make time or you might go insane. Even my friends on law review and with great grades made time to hang out.

In fact, in my experience it's common for law schools to encourage students to socialize with each other...sometimes by giving them lots and lots of free or cheap booze as evidenced by this description of one NYU's parties last year. And we wonder why alcoholism is so high amongst attorneys.

    Shot Glass

Another example, my school rents out a bar every month or so for student socials where 5 or 10 dollar admission gets a student all he/she can drink. Also the school holds the formal Barrister's Ball ("law school prom") every spring.

My main point is that you will have time to do things outside of school and law schools even encourage such extracurricular activities to an extent.

Maybe you will not have as much free time as in the past and maybe around exam period this doesn't apply. But whether you enjoy spending time with family, going out with friends, or something else, there will be some time for fun during law school. Especially once that first year is over.
